IP Address: what it is and how identification on the internet works

An IP address is a unique numerical identifier assigned to a device on a network, similar to a “phone number” for a computer.

Types of IP addresses:

  • static - permanent, assigned to a specific device;
  • dynamic - automatically assigned for the duration of the connection;
  • pseudo-static - remains constant within a local network.
